Arts Taekwondo

Southeast asian martial arts – Pencak Silat

Pencak Silat refers to more than 800 martial arts schools across the 13,000 islands of Indonesia. According to legend, they were used to fight against the Dutch invaders. Later outlawed by the Dutch, this hybrid system is known under the name pencak Java and Bali, Sumatra and silat. Pencak silat The term was coined only after Indonesia had been unified and accepted 1973. Some recent silat systems have adopted the tradition of the Japanese martial art denoting rank belts of different colors. Art is became popular in the world and has also developed a sporting tradition with its own world championships.

Pencak line

Knowledge of art has been passed orally from master to student, so there are few written records. Soldiers and warriors are known to have trained in silat forms in the Srivijaya kingdom in Sumatra between the 7th and 14th centuries and the Majapahit kingdom in Java between the 13th and 16th centuries. However, archaeological evidence suggests silat may have been used from the 6th century. Several schools trace their lineage silat warriors to Bugis, a band of tough mercenaries known for their fighting skills. When the Dutch occupied the islands between the 17th and 20th centuries, the practice went underground and resurfaced after independence in 1949. Traditional Indonesian dances and rituals are supposed to contain aspects of art old.

Style and arms

Pencak Silat is no standardized techniques, partly due to the fact that differences between schools depend the environment in which the student training. For example, the techniques of urban travel in different styles of those variants in the jungle. The Javanese people tend to use art as a form of self-defense. Despite this, the training regimes include instruction in all bare hand techniques followed by the use of weapons.

The weapons include common Indonesian fighting tools, like sticks, sticks, and stems bamboo, steel or wood. The Cabang "is a little, a three-pronged knife thought to derive from the Trident. Kerambit The" is a small, curved blade that women often hide in hair. The "Sabit" is a sickle used as a blocking, striking and cutting weapon. The keris is a curved blade that is washed with acid. The "tedang" is a common sword with a single or a double-edged sword.

Master and student

The large number of separate schools pencak silat Indonesia are the result of very localized styles that arose when a master in a village teaches his own method. This instruction may include aspects of shamanism, animism, healing, and spiritual practices of others. The Most silat players train in the methods of spiritual awareness, learn to exploit what they believe to be supernatural powers.

In general, would-be students give gifts in order to be accepted by a traditional master. It may be a knife, which symbolizes the sharpness of the attitude and spirit, and a roll of white fabric, whose captain holds a sacred place and used to wrap the corpse the student should be killed.

The blood of ritually slaughtered a chicken can be spread on the ground where the student hopes Learning means the student would be blood shed in the fight against it had decided not to study art. Thus the relationship the teacher and the student becomes like a blood relationship, such as that between father and son.

Other influences

The hand and strikes foot, blocking techniques, and throws suggest art has influenced India and China. The throw-General launched from a position very low or a deep crouch, are often regarded as the signature move silat. Between the 7th and 12th centuries, Indonesia has been influenced by Mahayana Buddhism, and this, with the arts, weapons and philosophies that brought Indians and Chinese, have helped shape the art. The Experts believe that the Hindu culture and its influence on techniques taken silat bases and, with the late arrival of Islam came from the separate "tibialis"-short, Arab curved dagger that probably inspired the pencak silat keris blade.
