Beginner Karate Kids seem to be getting younger and younger nowadays. What is the ideal age to start martial arts? Is your toddler ready to become a Karate Kid?
Back when I started practicing martial arts in the early 1980s in England, youngest child of my local karate school was to take 8 years. Therefore, I started karate at the age of 8 years. I then thrown in with older children and adults had the opportunity to "all or nothing".
Karate has become more popular Over the years, the children of a younger age to engage in martial arts. It was obviously a strong influence of Ninja Turtles and Power Rangers but also with schools constantly expanding commercial karate, specialized programs for small children are becoming increasingly popular. Programs with names like Tiny Tigers, Little Ninjas or small dragons abound in most martial arts schools. So at what age children are accepted in these programs?
It seems that the age of 3 ½ to 4 years is the youngest age for children to be accepted into a program of arts martial. This almost coincides with the age that a child can start kindergarten and it is no coincidence. So, if your child is about 4 years, then he or she will probably be accepted in your martial arts school. However, there are other factors you should be aware.
· Is this the first time your child has been involved in a group activity? If so be prepared for some initial nervousness and reluctance to leave the ground without you.
· Have you ever taken your child to your local school for martial arts attend a course? If not, do so if this is a great opportunity to pre-frame your child so he or she knows what is expected and what a karate school and karate class is like.
• Do you have realistic expectations for your child? Karate for a 4-year-old should be subject of coordination, focus and fun. It is not self-defense and discipline hard core at this age. These aspects will gradually implemented over time as they age.
· Your child can stay focused for about half an hour at a time? Most very young children have the attention span and therefore when teaching karate to 4 years, a teacher needs to use a series of drills that short but concentrated flow from one to another. Be sure to find an instructor who uses this type of method, so your child will maintain interest throughout the class.
· Can your child take one or two of instructions? Your child needs to be able to follow the basic guidelines to operate in a karate class.
If your child does not do this at home then it may be a sign that he or she must also struggle in the first karate class. On the other hand, a karate class in May is the ideal to help your child learn the value of the structure and basic discipline.
All points above are just a few ideas that you should ask when you consider register your young child in a martial arts class. The bottom line is that you probably will not know all the answers except if you give it a go, but at least you should have some ideas of what to expect and how you can help your child make the transition successful in a fun and valuable.
