tai chi is a martial art of good defense?
For a little special here, we'll start with Symantic base: Tai Chi is a philosophy, not a martial art. The martial art which you speak is Tai Chi Chuan. I am really disappointed by some of the answers here, especially those who practiced martial arts for ten years or more. Ignorance abounds. Tai Chi Chuan is roughly translated as "Supreme Ultimate Fist". However where it was originally designed to be a martial art and has a great potential for those patient enough to learn it. It is practiced slowly due the idea that there is no basic karate, tae kwon do, Tang Soo Do, etc. You can practice reverse punches, before kicking, and all kinds other simple movements at full speed. As Tai Chi Chuan is an internal art that focuses first on breathing, balance and centering can not start the execution of movements at full speed right away. In addition, he is sparring in Tai Chi Chuan. Not actually "sticky hands" as one responder noted, it is called "push hands" (sticky hands would be more effective to Chin Na or jiu-jitsu). The three main types pushing hands are fixed (fighters stop and try to off-balance the opponent) in a single step (similar to the case, but we can make a deliberate off-balance sheet), and moving, which is like most sparring in other disciplines. Push Hands can be performed at faster speeds with experienced practitioners. As far as a Tai Chi Master enter the ring with Mike Tyson, I bet on the master. Besides, Mike Tyson is just brute force – when fighting with other talented boxers, he would still outperformed (I wonder why he is the go-to guy). However, as many have said with precision, it takes much longer to get a grip on the martial application, and if you find a teacher qualified. If you have the patience and time to learn, I recommend it. If you need something more immediate, I recommend something else. Good luck you in your training.
